About

Helping childcare businesses build financially healthy futures.

We specialise in childcare because the sector deserves accounting support that understands care, compliance and commercial pressure together.

Founder of The Childcare Accountants

Founder story

From childminding to
childcare accountancy.

I used to be a childminder, so the advice here is grounded in real childcare experience as well as accounting knowledge. I understand how quickly the admin builds up, how personal the work can feel, and why clear numbers matter when you are responsible for children, families and a business.

That background is why The Childcare Accountants focuses on practical, calm and sector-specific support rather than generic small-business accountancy.

How we work

Friendly support, serious standards.

Our values are not slogans. They shape how we explain your numbers, handle deadlines and support decisions when childcare work already feels busy enough.

01

We Understand

We've experienced the realities of childcare ourselves. We listen first and give advice that works in the real world, not just on a spreadsheet.

02

Keep It Simple

Accounting doesn't need to feel complicated. We explain things clearly, minimise unnecessary admin and make it easy for clients to know what they need to do.

03

Be Proactive

Good accounting isn't just about looking backwards. We look ahead, raise issues early and help clients make better financial decisions.

04

Genuinely Care

Behind every set of accounts is a person, a family and a childcare business they've worked hard to build. We treat their business with the care we'd want for our own.

05

Do Things Properly

We're friendly and approachable, but never casual about our responsibilities. Accuracy, professionalism and doing the right thing matter.

Professional standards

Qualified, regulated and built for modern records.

You get approachable childcare-sector support backed by professional accountancy standards, HMRC-facing processes and cloud-friendly systems.

FAQ

Questions childminders and childcare owners usually ask.

A fuller set of answers for childminders, nurseries and childcare businesses thinking about working with us.

Do you specialise in childminders and childcare businesses?

Yes. The Childcare Accountants is focused on supporting childminders and childcare businesses.

Our co-founder, Kara, is a former childminder, so we understand first-hand the realities behind the numbers: families, funding, fees, paperwork, long days and everything involved in running a childcare setting.

We combine that experience with our accounting expertise to provide practical, straightforward support that makes sense for childcare businesses.

I'm a childminder. Do I really need an accountant?

You don't have to use an accountant simply because you're a childminder, but having the right support can save you considerable time and take much of the stress out of managing your accounts and tax.

We'll help you keep your finances organised, understand what you can claim and make sure the information needed for your tax return is properly prepared.

Our Childminder Essentials service is designed specifically to make accounting simple and affordable for childminders.

Can you help me if I'm just starting as a childminder?

Absolutely. Getting things organised from the beginning can make life much easier later.

We can help you understand registering with HMRC, record keeping, allowable expenses, tax, Making Tax Digital and the financial side of becoming self-employed.

We'll keep the accounting side straightforward so you can concentrate on getting your childcare business up and running.

What expenses can I claim as a childminder?

There are a range of expenses that may be allowable when running a childminding business, including toys and resources, food, insurance, professional fees, training and certain costs associated with using your home for childminding.

What you can claim depends on your individual circumstances and the relevant tax rules.

We'll help you understand which expenses are allowable and make sure legitimate business costs are properly reflected in your accounts.

Can you help with Tax-Free Childcare and government funding income?

Yes. Childcare income doesn't always arrive as a straightforward payment directly from a parent.

Depending on your setting, you may receive money through Tax-Free Childcare, funded childcare schemes, local authorities and parents, among other sources.

We understand the importance of recording different types of childcare income properly and can help you keep your records organised.

Do you work with nurseries as well as childminders?

Yes. Although we have a strong understanding of childminding, our services aren't limited to childminders.

We can support nurseries, preschools, wraparound-care providers, holiday clubs, after-school clubs and other childcare businesses, including businesses that are growing and need more regular financial support.

For businesses with more complex requirements, we'll put together a tailored proposal based on the support you actually need.

How much does it cost?

We like to keep our pricing straightforward.

Our Childminder Essentials package starts at £19.99 per month, with Payroll from £19.99 per month and additional employees from £4.99 each per month.

For nurseries and childcare businesses requiring bookkeeping, management accounts, advisory support or other services, we'll provide a clear tailored proposal.

We'll explain what's included before you sign up, so you know what you're paying for.

Can you take over from my existing accountant?

Absolutely. Switching accountants is usually much easier than people expect.

Once you've decided to join us, we'll contact your previous accountant and arrange the professional handover.

We'll guide you through our onboarding process, let you know what we need and aim to make the transition as straightforward as possible.

Do I need to use accounting software?

If you're required to follow Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, you'll need to keep digital records and use compatible software to meet the relevant HMRC requirements.

We'll help you understand when MTD applies to you and guide you through the software and record-keeping process.

Technology shouldn't make your accounts more complicated. Our aim is to give you a simple, compliant and manageable way of keeping your records up to date.

Can you help me understand whether my childcare business is actually profitable?

Yes, and this becomes particularly important as your childcare business grows.

Having money in the bank doesn't necessarily tell you how profitable your business is.

We can help you understand your income, expenses, staffing costs, margins and cash flow so you have a clearer picture of how the business is performing and can make better-informed decisions.

I've fallen behind with my accounts or tax return. Can you still help?

Yes. Being behind shouldn't stop you from getting in touch.

We'll establish what's outstanding, explain what needs to be done and help you work through it in a manageable way.

The sooner we understand where things stand, the sooner we can help you get your records organised and work towards getting everything back on track.

Do we need to meet in person?

No. We can work with childcare businesses remotely, so you don't need to take time out of your working day to travel to an accountant's office.

Documents and records can be handled digitally, and meetings can take place by phone or video call.

It means you can access specialist childcare accounting support regardless of where you're based in the UK.

How easy is it to get in touch when I have a question?

We want you to feel comfortable asking questions, even the ones you might think are small.

One of the benefits of working with a specialist accountant is having someone you can turn to when you're unsure about the financial side of your childcare business.

The level of ongoing support will depend on the service or package you've chosen, and we'll make this clear from the outset.

What happens after I get in touch?

We'll start by learning a little about you, your childcare business and the support you're looking for.

For straightforward services such as Childminder Essentials, we'll explain what's included and what we need to get you started. For larger or more complex childcare businesses, we'll discuss your requirements and provide a tailored proposal.

Once you're happy to go ahead, we'll guide you through onboarding and, where necessary, arrange the handover from your previous accountant.

No pressure, no unnecessary jargon and no need to have everything perfectly organised before you contact us.
